Stainless process skid with vacuum vessel, heat exchanger and pipework
Deaeration and heat-treatment reference image. The process order and conditions are project-specific.

01

What deaeration does

It removes entrained air and some volatiles under vacuum. It can reduce foaming, improve filling and support colour, but it does not sterilize the product or guarantee a shelf life.

02

What heat treatment does

It applies a controlled thermal process to the product. The time/temperature and validation are product-specific. A heat exchanger can foul, and the run length must be assessed.

03

Choose the order

Deaeration may be before or after a preheat step, depending on the product and equipment. The order should be justified by the oxygen-control and thermal process, not by a generic line diagram.

04

Connect to filling

Treated product must be protected until the package is closed. The filler, sterile boundary and package are part of the system. A deaerator or heater alone does not make the product shelf-stable.

Practical questions

Should deaeration be before or after heating?

It depends on the product and process. Some lines deaerate before heating, some after a preheat. The decision should be supported by product trials and the oxygen-control strategy.

Can heat treatment replace deaeration?

No. They address different issues. Heat treatment may drive off some air, but it is not a designed deaeration step.
